The great importance of teaching other people

Dear brothers and sisters,

Assalaam ‘Alaykum,I hope you are well by the grace of Allah. I would like to take this opportunity to discuss a narration from our prophet Muhammad (sallAllahu 'alaihi wa sallam), which has been reported as follows:

It was narrated to us by Muhammad bin ‘Abd al-A’laa Al-Sistani from Salamah bin Rajaa’, from Al-Waleed bin Jameel, from Al-Qasim Abu ‘Abd Al-Rahman, from Abu Umamah al- Bahili, who said two men were mentioned to the Messenger of Allah, sallAllahu 'alaihi wa sallam (peace be upon him), one a worshipper and the other a scholar (of Islam).

The Messenger of Allah () said, "The superiority of the learned over the devout worshipper is like my superiority over the most inferior amongst you (in good deeds)." He went on to say, "Allah, His angels, the dwellers of the heaven and the earth, and even the ant in its hole and the fish (in water) supplicate in favor of those who teach people knowledge."

From this hadeeth, we learn the great importance of teaching other people what we have learned as good when it comes to the religion of Islam. The hadeeth also makes it clear that the person who worships Allah and teaches others is much better that those who only worship.

The best people are those who teach the Quran as well as the Arabic language due to their immense importance when it comes to the matters of religion.

Students who learn the Quran and Arabic- as they cannot learn the Quran properly without understanding its language -  should take full advantage of what they are taught and one of the ways they can do that is by teaching others. There are several benefits from doing this:

They will be better at what they studied.

They will be more likely to retain the knowledge they have learned, as teaching is one of the best ways of cementing information in the mind.

Allah loves those who teach others and rewards them accordingly.

As the prophet Muhammad, sallAllahu 'alaihi wa sallam, taught us, this will be ongoing charity for the person; even after their death and this will lead to multiplication of reward in the Hereafter as well as removal of sins.

Allah will raise teachers of Islamic knowledge in rank.

All creation in the heavens and the Earth will pray for them as we read in the hadeeth above.

If we reflect on point 4 above, what is better than teaching the Quran, the literal word of Allah, to others? There is another very important thing we should take in consideration. We should be very careful of what we teach others and make sure that the material we teach others is correct and authentic as well as being from  reliable sources. If we are going to teach the Quran we should reach a certain level of proficiency when it comes to the science of tajweed, which teaches us how to recite the Quran properly.

In summary, the best thing you can do in life is to have strong knowledge about the religion, especially the Quran and Arabic, and then teach this to others.

Please remember us and anyone else who taught you beneficial knowledge in your prayers.  We hope you found this article beneficial.

May Allah reward you all with good and increase us all in knowledge and action.
