Sent to the Arab tribe of Thamūd, Ṣāliḥ (AS) called his people to monotheism. His narration serves as a testament to the divine wisdom embedded within linguistic and cultural context, as he delivered the message in Arabic—a language chosen for clarity, depth, and universality. His story, chronicled extensively in the Qur’an, serves as a timeless lesson on faith, patience, and the consequences of defying divine commandments. Further, his legacy underscores the profound importance of the Arabic language in preserving divine knowledge, solidifying its role as the sacred vessel for revelation. Thus, QIAS(Qortoba Institution for Arabic Studies)facilitates , for non-native Muslim speakers in Britain ,France ,America & Canada, access to the linguistic heritage of revelation &mastering the Arabic language.
The Civilization of Thamūd
The Thamūd, an ancient Arab people, inhabited the region now known as (Mada’in Ṣāliḥ) in present-day Saudi Arabia. They were known for their architectural prowess, carving grand dwellings into the mountains and flourishing through agricultural prosperity. However, despite their material success, they succumbed to arrogance, idol worship, and moral decadence, prompting Allah (SWT) to send Prophet Ṣāliḥ (AS) to guide them. The Qur’an describes their sophisticated society, stating:
“وَكَانُوا۟ يَنۡحِتُونَ مِنَ ٱلۡجِبَالِ بُيُوتٗا ءَامِنِينَ”
( “And they used to carve out dwellings in the mountains, feeling secure.” )This depiction highlights both the civilization’s ingenuity and their misplaced sense of invulnerability.
The Call to Monotheism and the Resistance of Thamūd
Prophet Ṣāliḥ (AS) emerged as a beacon of guidance, calling his people to abandon idol worship and surrender to the singularity of Allah (SWT). His message was one of righteousness, urging them to recognize their blessings and submit to divine authority.
He conveyed his mission in words recorded in the Qur’an:
“يَٰقَوۡمِ ٱعۡبُدُواْ ٱللَّهَ مَا لَكُم مِّنۡ إِلَٰهٍ غَيۡرُهُ”
( “O my people, worship Allah; you have no deity other than Him.”)Despite his eloquence in the Arabic language and sincerity, the Thamūd rejected his call, entrenched in their pagan traditions and worldly pride. They demanded tangible proof of his divine appointment, a request that led to the manifestation of a miraculous sign.
The Miracle of the She-Camel
As an act of divine mercy and a testament to Ṣāliḥ’s (AS) legitimacy, Allah (SWT) provided an extraordinary miracle—a she-camel that emerged from solid rock. This miraculous creature was intended as a test, requiring the Thamūd to respect it and refrain from harm.Allah (SWT) commanded:
“هَٰذِهِۦ نَاقَةُ ٱللَّهِ لَكُمۡ ءَايَةٗ فَذَرُوهَا تَأۡكُلۡ فِيٓ أَرۡضِ ٱللَّهِ وَلَا تَمَسُّوهَا بِسُوٓءٍ فَيَأۡخُذَكُمۡ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ”
( “This is the she-camel of Allah [sent] to you as a sign. So let her eat within Allah’s land and do not harm her, lest you be seized with a painful punishment.” )However, rather than heeding this divine directive, the leaders of Thamūd conspired against the camel, ultimately slaughtering it in defiance of Allah’s command.
Divine Punishment
The slaying of the she-camel marked the culmination of Thamūd’s arrogance and transgression, sealing their fate. Prophet Ṣāliḥ (AS) forewarned his people of impending devastation should they persist in their rebellion. He cautioned:
“فَتَمَتَّعُواْ فِي دَارِكُمۡ ثَلَٰثَةَ أَيَّامٍۚ ذَٰلِكَ وَعۡدٌ غَيۡرُ مَكۡذُوبٍ”
( “Enjoy yourselves in your homes for three days. That is a promise not to be denied.” ) Three days later, the wrath of Allah (SWT) descended upon them. A cataclysmic earthquake and a deafening scream obliterated the disobedient ones, leaving their once-thriving civilization in ruin.
“فَأَخَذَتۡهُمُ ٱلرَّجۡفَةُ فَأَصۡبَحُواْ فِي دِيَٰرِهِمۡ جَٰثِمِينَ”
( “So the earthquake seized them, and they became within their homes [corpses] fallen prone.” )This divine retribution stands as a stark reminder of the consequences of arrogance and rejection of truth.
