      Ashura Day

      Definition of Ashura

Ashura means The Day of Remembrance. It is the tenth day of Muharram in the Islamic calendar.

Ashura is the day that Moses and Israelis (the Israel people) were saved from Pharaoh by God creating a path in the Sea. While Pharaoh and his soldiers drown in the sea.

      Ashura

It was narrated that Ibn ‘Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said that The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) came to Madinah and saw the Jews fasting on the day of ‘Ashura’. He said, “What is this?” They said, “This is a good day, this is the day when Allah saved the Children of Israel from their enemy and Mousa fasted on this day.” He said, “We are closer to Mousa than you.” So he fasted on this day and told the people to fast.(Narrated by al-Bukhaari ,1865 )

The fast of Ashura was known at the days of Ignorance before the Prophet’s mission, It was proven from Aisha may Allah be pleased that: “The people of ignorance were fasting”.

Al-Qurtubi said that: May Qurush used to fast Ashura based on what Prophet Ibrahim used to do .  It has also been proven that  Prophet Muhammed  (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to fast in Makkah before he emigrated to Madinah  but after emigration he found the Jews celebrating that day so he asked for the reason.

      The virtue of fasting Ashura

      1. It was narrated that Ibn ‘Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: It was narrated that Ibn ‘Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I never saw the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) so keen to make sure he fasted any day and preferring it over another except this day, the day of ‘Ashura’, and this month – meaning Ramadan. Narrated by al-Bukhari, 1867.
The meaning of” investigating “is fasting to collect the reward and desire.
      2. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Fasting the day of ‘Arafat I hope Allah will expiate thereby for the year before it and the year after it, and fasting the day of ‘Ashura’ I hope Allah will expiate thereby for the year that came before it.” Narrated by Muslim, 1162.
It is preferred to fast the day previous to Ashura ( Tasu’a), the ninth of Muharram.
      3. Narrated ‘Abd-Allaah ibn Abbas, may God be pleased with them, said: When The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him fasted on the day of Ashura and ordered by fasting, they said: “O Messenger of Allah, this day is glorified by the Jews and Christians, the Prophet replied “and If so , The next year, God willing ,we will fast the ninth  “but the Prophet Muhammed Peace be upon him died    before the next year (Narrated by Muslim 1916)

The lowest thing we should do is fasting Ashura only but it is much better to fast the ninth of Muharram. Much fasting in Muharram was better and better.

We ask Allah to make us among the people who follow the Prophet orders and deeds. Peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family and companions.
